1) The mission
-HI is above all known for its orthopaedic devices made from local materials, mainly for victims of antipersonnel landmines. But the organisation, which focuses on handicapped people, also works with AIDS victims, in particular in Kenya, polio invalids, for instance in Angola, as well as road accidents casualties, as in Cambodia and Laos. In order to prevent diseases likely to provoke physical handicaps, HI sponsors medical structures and assists families of the victims by reinforcing local capacities. Since 1991, HI has also developed psychological programmes for refugees, parents of handicapped children and its own expatriates.
