Haramayn (Mu’assasat al-Haramayn al-Khariyya) - Comments

2) The way it works

-In its fight for holy war (jihad), the AHF does not seem to distinguish between relief to the victims and support to an armed struggle. The objective of the Foundation is humanitarian though. From this standpoint, one should not confuse the organization with homonymous violent groups, i.e. the “al-Haramayn Brigades” that claimed responsibility for an attack on the headquarters of the security forces in Riyadh on the 21st of April 2004.

-Although it was forbidden in 2004, the network of al-Haramayn probably still works in disguise. In each of the countries in which it was established, the AHF was already used to operate through structures with different names, not even to mention the spelling variations of the word al-Haramayn, equally transcribed as al-Haramain, al-Harameyn, al-Haramein, etc. In Holland, for instance, it was represented in Amsterdam by the Al Tawhid Mosque and Foundation, another Saudi charity. In Indonesia, explain Millard Burr and Robert Collins, the AHF simply moved its offices in the suburb of Jakarta when asked to close down in 2003. In 2004, the Foundation was still active in Java and inaugurated an Islamic boarding school in the capital city. In Bangladesh, again, the AHF carried on its programmes despite its official closure in 2004.
