Frères des Hommes - History

1965-1969

-From 1965, France: started off in the shanty towns of Calcutta where Mother Teresa worked, FDH is lauched by Armand Marquiset who is also the founder of the French Petits Frères des Pauvres (Little Brothers of the Poor), a Catholic charity for the elderly. Relying on a network of Christian communities around the world, FDH focuses on helping children and at first sends volunteers to urban areas in India and Brazil. FDH then shifts its focus to rural development in order to fight the impoverishment of peasants and to avoid a massive drift to urban centres. FDH is especially supportive of agricultural cooperatives in Latin America (Brazil, Peru and Ecuador).

-1969, Belgium: FDH extends its network in Europe and creates its Flemish equivalent, Mensenbroeders. The same is done in Luxembourg and in Italy with Fratelli Dell’uomo. These national associations are autonomous but coordinate their efforts.
